My name is Nikita Thampi and im in 10th grade. I got to Gems World Academy. I have a Personal Project for which the topic i have chosen is ocean litter. I am creating something similar to a short documentary. My goal by the end of this project is to create awarness about the amount litter present in the sea as well as pollution.
Throughout the next couple of weeks i will be posting a few questoins. i would really appreciate it if you could help me by responding to those questoins as well as sharing your thoughts and information.
The questions i am adding for this week are :
1). Does the silence of the ocean add to its beauty?
2). Is there anything happening to the oceans and its life that is bothering you?
3). Is the damage solely man-made?

1 - absolutely, we were in the Philippines diving over Christmas and they dynamic fishing over there, you could be diving and suddenly here a large bang, very concerning. Part of diving is for the silence and observing the waterlife in its natural surroundings.
2 - the death of the corals, its so upsetting to see, its being bleached and slowly dying.
3 - sure, I dont think mother nature is causing this, its all the fault of man and how we are destroying the planet slowly - just look at Dubai, no viz, no fish, no coral, how much is this due to the digging and creating of the palms and world?
Hope this helps.

1. It certainly does, in fact one of the attractions of the ocean is that it is a completely different world, the silence is just one of it key attributes
2. Over fishing, shark finning, Manta ray killing for medicine, temperature increase which is killing the coral reefs, offshore drilling and pollution by people not respecting more responsible ways to dispose of rubbish
3. I believe that we are responsible for the damage, all of it is avoidable by better education around the issues and spreading the word to ensure everyone is aware that they can make a difference

corals make, when they are growing...
2. Quite a lot: but before all it´s the oil spills and the usage of dispersants to clear the surface quickly, that worry me most
because this really gets out of control after the oil remains have sunken to the ground
3. No, damage, distruction, change and adaption have always been part of nature. Cyclones, Tsunamis, volcanic eruptions have always influenced the flora and fauna of the earth. But we seriously have to take care about the damages that are obviously man-made, like over-fishing, oil spills or littering up everything
