Reaching out today for a better tomorrow

This weekend I had the privilege to be asked to help document a rescue diver course for a group of young divers. With an average age of 15, this group of enthusiastic advanced divers took their qualification one step further by taking part in a full days practical rescue training.

Among many skills, they learnt how to help tired and panicked divers on the surface, how to help provide care to divers with cramp and panicked if out of air under water, how to rescue unconscious divers on the surface and under water bringing them to the surface in a controlled manner, providing rescue breaths whilst taking the victim back to the boat, how to lift the victim from the water onto the boat using a back board and finally how to deliver emergency oxygen. These skills added to their Emergency First Response skills previously taken by the group training them in providing CPR.

The rescue course has long been known to be the most valuable course a diver can take. It teaches the diver confidence in how to self rescue and more importantly, how to help a fellow diver who has managed to get themselves into a dangerous situation.

These young adults are well on their way to completing this valuable course, their enthusiasm to take their learning one stage further is amazing to see and I am so pleased they allowed me to watch and document this day. At the beginning of March they are planning to complete their training, learning search patterns to help locate a missing diver and then to complete their training, taking part in a full rescue simulation.

The whole experience has reminded me to never assume a divers level of experience and training from the age of the diver or how many dives they have logged. These young divers could well be more advanced than the other divers on a trip, they could be responsible for helping any diver who has found themselves in trouble and possibly be responsible for saving a life.

Well done to George, Maxinne, Amy, Harry, Jenna, Caitlin, Ashley, Jemma, Rebecca and Robert – truly inspirational divers! Many thanks to Ernst, the Pavilion Dive Centre Instructors and Dive Masters, a great day and a lot of learning for all!! Please see the photos for a pictorial diary.
